The Foundation
The Foundation of the Centre for Hermeneutical Research, which is a public benefit organization, was established in 1993 by the directors and professors of the Faculty of Theology and Humanities of Károli Gáspár University of the Reformed Church in Hungary and the Lutheran Theological University with the contribution of the associates of the Eötvös Loránd University and the Baptist Theological Seminary. This particular institution was the first in Hungary which came into existence following the principle of integration of the institutions of higher education and complying with interdenominationalism.
The work of the Foundation is coordinated by the Board. The Károli Gáspár University of the Reformed Church in Hungary established the Institution of the Centre for Hermeneutical Research in 2009. The Institution employs a part-time administrator who acts in accordance with the instructions of the director of the institution. Since the Foundation is a public benefit organization it needs to apply for tenders to fulfil its work in the field of research, education and organising conferences.
The Centre for Hermeneutical Research has been the publisher of the Hermeneutical Booklets (Hermeneutikai Füzetek) since 1994 and besides many other publications, the Institution has undertaken the editorial works of the volumes of Magyar Luther Könyvek and Magyar Luther Füzetek.
The Jonathan Edwards Centre-Hungary was constituted in 2010 under the egis of the Institution of the Centre for Hermeneutical Research to facilitate and stimulate the research in Jonathan Edwards’ life and work. The JCE-Hungary works in collaboration with the Yale University, New Haven.
The Institution of the Centre for Hermeneutical Research cooperates closely with the Institution of English Studies of Károli Gáspár University of the Reformed Church in Hungary: to carry out extensive research into the subject of English Reformation e.g. William Tyndale’s work. Besides this, the aforesaid cooperation investigates the protestant traditions of the English and American Literature with special emphasis of English Drama and John Milton’s poetry. The Institution coordinates its work with the Hungarian Shakespeare Committee (Magyar Shakespeare Bizottság) and the Hungarian Luther Society (Magyar Luther Szövetség). The Institution’s further functions include communicating and cooperating with other European hermeneutical research institutions, editing and distributing publications.
